Tricolored Munia @ Shark Valley 7/17/2015

Andy Kratter just posted this to the Birding Florida FaceBook page,

"A Tricolored Munia was reported on eBird at Shark Valley yesterday by Michael Vasi. The photo is distant but looks to be correct. The FOSRC recently accepted a record from the Dry Tortugas as a wild stray from the established population in CUba, and in all likelihood this one is too. I do not think the ABA has acted on this yet (has it Bill Pranty?)."

Here's the eBird checklist with the photo:

Good afternoon Andy,

The ABA CLC deadlocked on the issue during first-round voting last year. We're holding off second-round voting pending information on the size and extent of the munia population in northern Cuba.

Best regards,

Thanks for the reply Bill. Jared Guerra and I arrived at Shark Valley yesterday at 1:30pm but had to wait under cover until 2:00pm to even start hiking because of a severe thunderstorm in the area. The visitor center lost power and everything! When the rain died down enough we headed south along the eastern road but the weather picked up again and we ended up leaving at 3:20pm. Never relocated the bird but did not have the opportunity to bird the western side of the loop.

I had a female orange cheeked waxbill in a buttonwood hedge at my farm in dania today. Escapee most likely

The birds were seen several times today; I saw them at 5:20pm a mile north of the tower on the west road. Pics are hard to get for me; I'm using an iphone and binoculars, and the birds are fairly skittish. I'll replace the ebird photo as soon as I can.
