The previously reported Townsend's Warbler is still on North Key Largo, as of 9:00 a.m., yesterday, Tuesday, April 3, 2018. Me, British birder, Paul Pugh, Paul Waller and two others all got excellent views of the bird, Paul Waller has an excellent photo on his Facebook page. Sorry for the late post. Life is good.......................

Has anyone seen the Townsend's Warbler at Key Largo recently? Friday or today?

On Paul's report I took the initiative to head down yesterday, Saturday morning. I arrived at 8:20am. I spent 4 hours focusing on Grouper Trail. I ended up with eight warbler species including a beautiful spring Cape May Warbler a previously reported Black-throated Green Warbler but no Townsend's Warbler. I ran into 2 other birds , one who stayed on longer than I. He was going to stay over night to bird Sunday as well. I have not heard any report that he had seen the bird.

I forgot to mention that we did have singing Black-whiskered Vireo

I just got back from Grouper Trail. Drove all the way from Lakeland. Spent two hours from 7:45 to 10:00am looking for the Townsend's. No luck. Saw the singing Black-throated Green and a Worm-eating.

Musa,

Sorry to hear that the bird was not present for you this morning. With no recent sightings, the bird may have decided it was time.

Next time, I guess. 😉

Something I find very intriguing. Another western bird, a Western Tanager (two, in fact) had been present for at least two or three weeks at Mead Botanical Gardens in Orlando.

They both disappeared the same time the Townsend Warbler did.

This could be coincidental, but I dont think so. Whether it was the changing of the winds or length of daylight, or something else, I hypothesize that some favorable cue for westward bird movement occured for these rare visitors.

There's so much we don't know. Amazing.
