Swallow-Tail Kites in Davie

Yesterday, I saw a Swallow-tail Kite soaring over my mango tree and then it picked a branch out of my neighbors Live Oak tree. This morning, I observed six perching Swallow-tail Kites, across the street from my house, in a tall Bald Cypress tree. In addition, there were two Swallow-tails Kites flying around those six Swallow-tail Kites, for a total of eight Swallow-tail Kites. I had seen then in the past, but never that large a number at one time. I live in Davie, in the ungated community of Davie West, which is at SW 26 Street and Hiatus Road.

that's interesting. I may go poking around that area tomorrow and see if I see them. Sounds like they're picking up nesting material. I've never seen one nest in urban Broward. I do remember them nesting in Dante Fascell Park in Dade prior to Andrew.

Look for a nest in tall Austrailian Pines, that is their preferred urban nest tree. Spanish Moss is a heavily used nest item which makes finding their nest a lot easier.

Larry, that exact little area has a lot of old Australian pines. I'll bet you're right. The Fascell birds were in an Australian pine.
