Short-eared Owl research road Everglades National Park
While out doing our June Challenge list, my son and I had a Short-eared Owl at about 8:30 am. Gary Davis reported one on May 30th. he told me that he saw this bird about a week and a half ago. The bird that we saw was the West Indies race which is a very buffy color compared to the less buffy of the northern race of Short-eared Owl. If you go all of the way to the end of Research Road in Everglades National Park, you will come to a red gate/bar across the road. If you walk south of this gate you will see a large mound on your right or west side. We saw the bird on the south end of this mound with a White-tailed Kite present as well.

When I reported the Short-eared Owl on May 30th, I did not mention details of my observation. I also noticed that my owl had a very buffy appearance.
