Shearwater by Smith
Here are a few photos that Smith Juan took on October 27th. of a shearwater from the Newport Pier. My first impression was that it was a Manx Shearwater. This very worn bird started to have me think that it may have been another shearwater species but I don't think so. The feathers are so worn that the colors are very subdued compared to a more normal plumage bird. This is a very nice find by Smith Juan! Going out on the right day with heavy northeastern winds can get you some exciting pelagic species like this bird. The best part is that you don't have to get seasick!
