Miami Breeding Bird Atlas

Hello birders!

We are collecting photos on Facebook of breeding birds to contribute to Florida's Second Breeding Bird Atlas. 2016 is the last year of this five year study and Miami-Dade is lagging far behind! In the 1980's, Miami-Dade had 120 confirmed breeding birds species. We have only documented 65 so far this time around.

When breeding season starts up again, we'll be posting "missions" to try to target locations and species in need of additional coverage. The next 2 months are all about raising awareness and gathering data from previous seasons (2011-2015). Pictures you post to the site won't be used without your permission; they're just a tool for gathering data.

Any data you contribute will be greatly appreciated, but we also want to involve as many Miamians as possible! Tell your non-birding friends. Pass this along to community groups and schools. This is a great project to get anybody involved in birding and make people more aware of the birds in their own backyards. If there's a significant amount of interest, I could attend this month's conservation meeting on the 28th to better coordinate and organize local efforts for the Atlas.

Thanks!

Hello Donna,
I have attached my flicker album that I made for you of some photos that I have taken of Osprey, Egyptian Geese, a Red-bellied Woodpecker and Cardinals in the breeding/nesting cycle. I hope that you will find something that you would like to include in your Atlas. Please feel free to use any photo(s), and if you have any trouble copying, let me know. There was a male and female blue jay couple that were nesting in a tree around the corner from my house in April, but I was unable to get a good photo of them. They, and their chicks, now come to my feeders, and I will be sure to watch for any nests again in 2016. Good luck with your Atlas!

Hey Jeanne,

Amazing photos! If you want to add them to our Facebook page (search for "Miami Breeding Bird Atlas") that'd be great! Be sure to like the page and get other birders involved. The Osprey at Flamingo have been documented. The Egyptian Geese appear to be at Fairchild, am I correct? That's the 4th breeding record for the state and the second for Dade County (can you tell how far behind we are?)! The Woodpecker, Cardinals, and Blue Jays may all be useable; I just need a general location of where they were.

For anyone else interested in contributing to the Atlas, it's a USGS citizen-science project that anyone can explore here: http://www.pwrc.usgs.gov/bba/index.cfm?fa=explore.ProjectHome&BBA_ID=FL2011 The photos are just a tool we use to confirm bird reports. So you don't /need/ a photo to contribute, just a location, date, and confident species ID.
