Bird Board

Looking into visiting this week - recommendations?

I'm 15 and have been an avid birder for around half my life. My mom and I are thinking of flying out to south Florida (from California) later this week because I'm a lister and am dying to see some warblers and tropical birds! However, I've heard it's been quite a rocky year bird-wise due to El Nino and such, so I'm wondering where the current best spots for lifers are (or whether we should wait and come another time).
I've already been to the area, but I only had time to go to a couple spots around Boca Raton (family event there), so I managed to see many of the common water birds. (I don't know how I didn't manage to see a Reddish Egret!)
We need to book tickets ASAP, so any insight or recommendations would be appreciated. Thank you!

Gabrielle, this is not really the ideal venue to answer your question as it is so broad in scope. You are welcome to forward your e-mail address and I will ask you a few questions and try to give you some ideas based on your answers.

Hi Gabrielle, Kudos to you for being interested in "birding". You can check www.ebird.org if you don't already know about that website. Go to Florida, County, Hotspots. You can see what others are seeing. There is no shortage of "birding" places here in Fla. Peaceful Waters in Palm Beach County (Wellington) is very good now for wading/shorebirds birds. You'll see 2 Sandhill Colts there. Wakodahatchee (Delray Beach) has "nesting" birds. If you wish to see a Reddish Egret, maybe try Merritt Island (Black Point Drive) in Brevard County. I had seen them there a while ago. Green Cay (Boynton Beach) had a juvenile there a while ago and I haven't seen him since. Both Green Cay/Wakoda also has warblers but no guarantees. Hope this helps. Happy Birding!
