Bird Board

looking for Scoters

Hi I am in town chasing the vagrants at Bill Baggs State Park and was looking for some other birds that would be lifers during my visit. I noticed there is a black scoter being seen at the Homestead Air Reserve Base. I’ve never heard of an inland scoter before. Is this a common sighting in the area? Is this air base open to the public or do other area lakes get scoters too? I know they prefer the coast, but if I could see one inland that would save a lot of time. thanks you for all the help.

Unfortunately there is not any public access to the base but it being so close to the coast does make the possibility of a Black Scoter there feasible. I have seen photos of a Sooty Tern blown onto the base. I would recommend trying the Black Point Marina jetty as well as Biscayne National Park's Convoy Point. I have also seen BLSC from Deering Estate's People's Dock but haven't noticed any recently.
