Here's more info: Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park opens @ 0800. Some parks occasionally open early, but not today. Park phone 305-361-5811
See Robin's recent post for parking and trail directions.
The Kirtland's Warbler was at the extreme north end of the trail she describes. At 0818 the group of 10 birders who arrived early had close up views of the bird for several minutes. It was near the water feeding on berries and stayed low to the ground. The bird hid from view for the next few minutes then came out for some of the late birders to see.
Between about 0900 and 0920 the bird was not seen which is when I departed. It takes 15-20 minutes to get from the park entrance to the bird spot which is why the earliest reports are about 0820.
If you're going to chase this bird I suggest arriving by 0730. Give yourself extra time because a popular boat show is going on this weekend just a few miles from the park.

Great advice, Tom. Fishermen line up early to grab spots along the bay so they will also be in line. The Donut Gallery opens at 5:30 AM if you want a local dive breakfast. It's very local (OK, sort of a greasy spoon), but hey, it's *our* local dive. As you enter the Village, turn right on Harbor Drive and turn at the 7-11. The DG is in the corner.
Patience is needed leaving Virginia Key because of boat show traffic.
