The Key West Quail-Dove isn't really from Key West or Florida, sometimes we get vagrants, 2 in the last month for example, but the species is only found in Bahamas, Cuba, Hispaniola, and Puerto Rico. It only has that name because that's were it was first discovered and described, it went extinct in the Keys in the late 1800's-early 1900's.

Robyn, You can see a Key West Quail-Dove in your own "backyard!" Check my Rare Bird Update (the orange bar at the top of the Bird Board) for directions to the Key West Quail-Dove that several birders, including me, saw this morning at Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park during a walk I led for the Florida Ornithological Society.

Was the bird still on the nature trail near the fig?

Actually, Key West Quail Dove was historically also found in the Florida Keys and southern mainland where it bred. It was first discovered on Key West which explains the name.
