June Challenge; Comment that the Dump Marsh pond to disappear soon

Dear All,

Good morning. The boys and I birded Cutler Wetlands and the Dump Marsh yesterday (June Challenge contribution? Lists below). The outing reminded me of a recent comment on the Board stating:

"Dump Marsh (2 of 3 ponds, the remaining one will be lost soon)"

Your thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Dump Marsh consists of three man-made ponds. There's the one just south of the wastewater plant, and two east of that. The northern of those two used to be the most productive one for ducks, and was visible from the levy by walking east from the wastewater plant. But recently the mangroves have grown too tall so the pond is no longer visible. If you notice, the remaining pond has a lot of trees growing along the edge, in a couple years, it too will no longer be visible. Hence, it will be lost in a birding sense. This is the continuing story of birding here in Miami-Dade County, that for various reasons, we are losing birding sites, whether it be do to loss of access, or loss of suitability of the sites for birds.

Thanks for the explanation, Toe. Maybe something can be done about that.
