Help with empid. species seen Oct. 6th at FIU Nature Preserve (South campus)

Hello all,

I was looking through some pictures and never got a confirmation on this bird (posted on the whatbird.com forum) so I was hoping for help from some locals. There are two pictures in total and it was seen on Oct. 6th at the FIU Nature Preserve (South campus).

Somebody on whatbird.com suggested it was an empid species:

"The primary projection seems pretty short, and the wing bars are bold, so I'd go with Empid species. Really the only one possible in Florida however is Least though, and this bird shows very little trace of an eye ring. I'd wait for others to chime in. "

I did not hear any vocalizations.

Thanks in advance!
Joe

The bird has a big headed appearance suggestive of Least, but this could be due to its posture. The lack of eyering suggests Traill's (Alder/Willow). Definitely an Empid, possibly a Traill's. The person that stated the only one possible in Florida is Least is incorrect. We get more Alders than Least in our area, with some Acadians, and the occasional Yellow-bellied and Willow, in addition to Least.

Thanks for the reply, Toe! I know Traill's has been seen at FIU so that makes sense.
