Can anyone tell me what species of gull this is, from Key Biscayne Thursday? It seemed much larger than the laughing gulls.
thanks much,

I am no gull expert but your birds looks very much like an immature Lesser Black-backed, a common species along the SE FL coast.
Good birding,

Another vote for first-year Lesser Back-backed.
Indeed a Lesser Black-backed Gull. It looks to be a first cycle bird more: fine brown streaking on the forehead, some white mottling on back, no defined mantle color, pink legs and a black bill.
The somewhat rounded head helps separate it from the "blockier headed" Herring and the slim bill and body helps dismiss the much bulkier Great Black-backed Gull.
Gulls are probably the toughest North American family of birds. I know they still trip me up quite a bit.
Good stuff, Tom.
