Bird Board

Dark-Eyed Junco

On Tuesday, June 14, We went to Kirby Storter Boardwalk, when we got near the location of the Chickee Hut, a small bird few onto the railing then down to the deck of the boardwalk. It was about 20' to 25' ahead of us. My first thought...this is a a Dark-Eyed Junco. Small in size, yellowish white bill, sparrow like bill, fairly long tail, grayish black/brown chest, head, back, wings, and top tail. The legs were pinkish orange, dark eyes....about 5 1/2" to 6" in size...light tan/white belly and under tail.. SORRY NO PHOTO. The bird hopped along for about 15' to 20' just short of the beginning of the hammock then flew off. We were able to observe the bird for about 5 to 10 minute getting great views. We returned today with 2 cameras hopping to get a picture. No luck...the bird did a no show!! In Kenn Kaufman's "Birds of North America" Copyright 2000 on page 253 at the top of the page...the bird to the left was the color we saw...with the color a little more black on head and chest area!

Other birds include: Pileated Woodpecker, Red-Bellied Woodpecker, Downy Woodpecker, Great Crested Flycatcher (they have little baby chicks), Eastern Meadowlark, Northern Flicker, Common Yellow-throat Warbler, Northern Parula, Carolina Wren, Tufted Titmouse, Barn Swallow, Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher, White-eyed Vireo, Swallow-tail Kite, Turkey Vulture, Osprey, American Crow, Red-Shouldered Hawk, Northern Cardinal, Pine Warbler, Loggerhead Shrike, and of course the Dark-eyed Junco. The other day Jeanette got a photo of an Eastern Bluebird on the rail of the boardwalk. So I would say this is a good place for summer birding.
