Bird Board
Dade County Christmas Bird Count: Assistance Needed
The Dade County Christmas Bird Count takes place on Saturday, December 17. Assistance is needed for the following areas:
Sadowski Critical Wildlife Area: This closed-to-the-public area on the north side of Virginia Key will be surveyed by kayak. Birders who volunteer for this assignment must be proficient kayakers, supply their own kayak and be able to accurately identify waterbirds. To volunteer, contact Laura Eldredge, Environmental Programs Coordinator, Biscayne Bay Aquatic Preserves (Florida Department of Environmental Protection) at Laura.Eldredge@dep.state.fl.us or (305) 795-3485.
Oleta River State Park: The park will be covered on foot. To volunteer, contact Elizabeth Golden at Elizabeth.Golden@dep.state.fl.us
Opa-Locka: Areas in need of coverage include Amelia Earhart Park and Opa-Locka Airport. To volunteer, contact me directly at field trips@tropicalaudubon.org.
Other party leaders for this CBC who are seeking assistance for their assigned areas are encouraged to post requests for assistance here.
Finally, any backyard birders living within the CBC circle are encouraged to submit sightings from your yard or neighborhood on count day. The CBC circle covers most (but not all) of urban Miami-Dade County north of Coconut Grove. Feel free to ask if you have questions or if you're unsure if you live within the CBC circle.

You can count on me to do the offshore pelagic by boat. So far I'm alone, and the long-range forecast calls for strong winds on that day. If anyone wants to volunteer to be the designated puker, please let me know.
Assistance has been requested for the team covering Miami Shores. To volunteer, contact Jim King at jamesmjrking@bellsouth.net
I'm still looking for someone to cover Opa-Locka for the Dade CBC on 12/17. Areas in need of coverage include Amelia Earhart Park and Opa-Locka Airport. It would be a shame if this area were not covered, as it typically gives us Burrowing Owl, Eastern Meadowlark and a few other species not seen elsewhere in the CBC circle. To volunteer, contact me directly at field trips@tropicalaudubon.org.
We've put this request out via twitter. I hope it helps!
I don't know the limits of the CBC circle for backyard birding. I am by the Highland Oaks Park on one of the lakes, by the Oleta River in the far NE corner of Miami- Dade. I see many birds all of the time. Should I count them?
Unfortunately, Sandra, your home is outside the Miami CBC circle. I would encourage you, though, to participate in the Great Backyard Bird Count in February. See http://www.tropicalaudubon.org/birds/citizen-science for details.
