Cuban Pewee @ Crandon Park Gardens (Key Biscayne) 3/14/16

Smith and I just relocated and photographed the Cuban Pewee that was found yesterday. Robin Diaz created a great map showing the location and I tied a surveyors tape to the tree we last had it in.

Good job, gentlemen. Needless to say that the bird was a surprise for my son and me during a function for my high school / alma mater. My son spotted the bird as usual with his eagle eyes, and that's when I started to run. One thing I learned from our walks with TAS and Robin Diaz in particular is that flycatchers often require photos to identify, so those little crescents were eye-openers for us! S;-> Photos will be forthcoming.

Thanks also to John Boyd, Robin Diaz and Brian Rapoza for id help and guidance. Also, I see this as karma for missing the Grassquit and the Zenaida Dove by a combined 30 minutes!

Congratulations again, Otto and Jose!

For anyone searching for the Cuban Pewee: Look for an active, compact bird with grayish-olive upperparts; postocular white crescent; light lores; short primary projection; long bill; faint wing bars.

The distribution and status of Cuban Pewee is Northern Bahamas and Cuba. According to _Rare Birds of North America_ (excellent book by Howell, Lewington and Russell), this species is not known to have seasonal movements but US records suggest that some early spring and late fall dispersal occurs. This jibes with previous records in Boca Raton and ENP.

I think the ENP bird was found in the fall, Sep or Oct if I recall.

Red Knot on the beach too! When you get the Pewee, check out the beach--we had a red knot and a few wilson's plovers as well.
