Bell's Vireo in West Miramar WCA

NOV 7, 2016: Bell's Vireo has shown up in the West Miramar WCA for the fifth winter since November 2007. It has always been in the same area, the extinct "Fake Hammock" along the unpaved western portion of Miramar Parkway. The entry gate is posted but it is on Homeowner Association land (sometimes wanders into unrestricted SFWMD land). The posting is intended to keep motorized vehicles out of the area, but as a member of the HOA I and my guests can access without a problem in any event..

Great news Ken! Last time I went there was in 2013. I think you can park where Miramar Parkway dead ends. I do not remember the location of the "Fake Hammock." Is the best way to access this area to park and then walk on foot around the gate? Any more specifics on how to find it from the gate? How long does it usually stay around? Congratulations! Alan

Last winter it appeared on October 15 2015 and was seen intermittently until February 18 2016. Mary Lou and I walk out almost every morning before sunrise, so we can meet up at the gate which is at the far west end of Miramar Parkway. You may park legally along the fence but do not block the gate or park on landscaped areas. Walk about 1/4 mile from there to the "Fake Hammock" which is on the left (south side) where the SW 196th Canal ends just past the last homes on left. The area is posted mainly to excluded vehicular traffic but the vireo is usually on HOA-owned land but may stray into SFWMD land which is not restricted (beyond no motor vehicles, camping, hunting, fires or firearms). As a member of the Homeowners Association I can guide you along HOA owned land. You may also park in our driveway in Monaco Cove if you wish.. We do not go out if there is the threat of rain. Sunrise is now around 6:35 AM. Please contact me at ken@rosyfinch.com to arrange a meet-up. I can walk back to meet you at the gate some time around 7:45 AM if that is more convenient than hiking in earlier with us.
