Barn owls in Miami?!

Hi all - we have had two barn owl sightings in South Miami in the last week, in developed areas a couple of miles apart. I’ve never seen them in Miami before. Are they common? Residents or migrants? (It was absolutely thrilling to see them!)

Both, we have a local population that is easier to find in some places than in others, they are very common around the West Kendall Agricultural Area/Miami Executive Airport. However during migration we get many that are coming down to spend winter here or in the Caribbean, so they are easier to see now and in Spring than the rest of the year.

Thanks, Luis! I will keep an eye out for them from now on.

Yes, I was surprised during a recent wildlife presentation to hear that we have barn owls here in Miami. I have never heard that, have never seen them, and would love to, as they are my favorite owls. I was thinking of heading down to Homestead one night, as they seem to like farms and agricultural settings. If there are areas you can suggest, I'd love to see them. Will try the West Kendall area someday, and bring my camera!

I found a barn owl @7 am in my yard in coconut grove. It was suffering and I thought it hard a hurt leg. I took it to the Pelican refuge place and it was suffering from rodenticide poisoning. I had wrapped it in a sheet and held it, it was such a privilege to be so close and look into the eyes of that heart-shaped fiull moon face. This was on 9/18, my daughter’s birthday. I keep looking but have not seen another, yet.

I have seen a white owl 3 times now. Always around 8:20 at night. Tonight my whole family saw it. It’s predominantly white. I think it might be a white barn owl but at first I thought it was a snowy owl because it’s so white. It’s so majestic!! I’m going to keep going out and try and get a picture. I live in Kendall near Palmetto Bay.

I keep seeing a barn owl three nights in a row at approx 8:30 pm flying over my neighborhood, north of The Falls. It's very light color and quite large. Identified it by its screeching hunting call.
