Bird Board

Are they closing Aerojet Rd?

I was down at Aerojet Rd this morning trying to find something (anything!) at Lucky Hammock and Frog Pond. I didn't find many birds but I did see that they have installed one of those menacing looking yellow gates complete with shiny new lock right at the intersection of 9336. I was there about a week ago and it was certainly not installed at that time so this just happened. Does anyone know if they are going to stop vehicular access all the way up to the highway? If o that's really going to limit access to some of the spots back past Frog Pond.

Don't be surprised if all our birding spots are eventually closed. After all, it's south Florida, where public lands are not open to the public. Go to any other county in the state, and you can drive into the landfills to see birds. I went to the top of the Cocoa landfill and to my surprise, no one even looked at me. If you look too long into our landfill from outside, they call security. Give me paranoia, or give me death!

Maybe this is their reaction to illegal activities in the area. I visited Aerojet on a recent visit to Florida and saw one area littered with shotgun shells. I also went to find Barn Owls at the "Cedar Grove" area south of Lake Okeechobee only to find a carload of locals "Target" shooting- parked at the gate right at the grove. There were piles of shells and casings there. No owls. It's easier for the authorities to close areas like this than try to police them I guess. Dave- Cortland Ohio

Yes, it is easier, but is that fair to everyone else? Illegal dumping occurs on many roads, but they don't close them down to traffic. Maybe the authorities should put more effort into stopping illegal activities than putting up signs and closing roads.
